Description Root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) is a serious disease of vegetable crops and a major limiting factor in the commercial production of okra in many parts of the country, including Karnataka. Investigations were carried out on screening of commercially available cultivars of okra against root-knot nematode, biochemical analysis in nematode resistant and susceptible varieties of okra and management of M. incognita infecting okra using various treatments viz., Pseudomonas fluorescens, Paecilomyces lilacinus, Neem cake, Mulching, solarization, marigold and Carbofuran 3G under field condition. Among seven okra cultivars viz., Arka Abhay, Arka Anamika, Usha, Rashi-20, Akshay, Solar-10 and Anoop, Arka Abhay and Anoop were found to be moderately resistant to M. incognita with root-knot indices of 3.0 at harvest. Increased activities of total phenol, total amino acids and reducing sugars and decreased content of total sugars were found in susceptible (Arka Anamika) variety compared to moderately resistant (Arka Abhay) variety. Under field condition, Paecilomyces lilacinus @ 15 g/sq. m applied at the time sowing was effective in improving plant growth parameters like plant height, number of leaves, root length, fresh and dry weight of root and shoot and yield (84.35 %). Lowest nematode population in soil and root and maximum reduction of galls and egg masses were recorded in Paecilomyces lilacinus @ 15 g/sq. m treated plants.
