Description |
Tomato (SolanumlycopersicumMill.) is one of the most popular and widely grown vegetable in the world and ranked 1st in preserved and processed vegetables. It is said to be native of Tropical America (Rick, 1976) and belong to family Solanaceae. Tomatoes are also called as “Poor man’s apple”. The genus Solanum consists of annual or short lived perennial herbaceous plants. Tomato is ranked at the top of all fruits and vegetables as a source of vitamins and minerals in the U.S(Stevens, 1974). Tomato plays a major role in human nutrition. The entrepreneur is an economic man, who tries to maximise his profits by identification and adoption of innovations. However, the entrepreneurs are not innovators but they are the persons with a will to act to assure risk and bring about a change through organization of human efforts. Entrepreneurship has become popular and respectable area today. Entrepreneurship is the key to rapid growth of a country. A country with able entrepreneur will always go faster on the path of industrialization as compared to a country, which has no able entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship is an activity that aims at starting establishing and increasing the size of an enterprise that produces and sells goods or services in market. Doing new things and doing things that are already done in a new way is therefore a simple definition of entrepreneurship. India is next only to the China in area and production of vegetable. In India it occupies an area of 879.6 thousand hectare with a production of 18227.0 thousand metric tons and average productivity is 20.7 metric tons per hectare. Major tomato growing states in India are Bihar, Karnataka, Orissa, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. In Madhya Pradesh, it is grown in 62.59 thousand hectare of land with the annual production of 1845.0 thousand metric tonnes and productivity of 29.5 metric tonnes per hectare (Annonymous 2014). In Sehore district, the area under tomato is 780 ha annual production of 20830 metric tonnes and productivity of 26.75 metric tonnes per hectare (Annonymous 2014). Assessing and developing behavior and attitudes of growers for becoming successful are the most important component of growers’ entrepreneurship development. Keeping the above factors in view, the present investigation was undertaken with the following objectives: 1. To know the socio - personal – economic, psychological and communicational attributes of tomato growers. 2. To study the entrepreneurial behaviour of tomato growers. 3. To analysis the relationship between independent variables with dependent variable. 4. To find out the constraints perceived by the tomato growers in production, storage and marketing of tomato. In order to achieve these objectives, the study was conducted in Sehore district of Madhya Pradesh. The district has been divided into 8 tehsils namely Sehore, Ashta, Ichhawar, Budni,Nashrullaganj,Rehti, Jawar and Shyampur and 5 blocks namely Sehore, Ashta, Ichhawar, BudniNashrullaganj. Sehore district consists of 5 blocks namely Sehore, Ashta, Ichhawar, Budni and Nashrullaganj. Out of which Sehore block was selected purposively for the study because area, production and productivity of tomato crop are highest. The Sehore block comprise of 290 villages, out of which 10 villages were selected on the basis of higher area with the help of RAEO’s and other officials. From each selected villages about 36% tomato growers were selected by using proportionate random sampling method. Hence, the total number of selected farmers was120. The data were collected through a pre-tested interview schedule. The collected data were analyzed through the statistical methods viz. frequency; percentage, mean and correlation coefficient test etc. I. Socio - personal – economic, psychological and communicational attributes of tomato growers 1. The higher percentage of tomato growers (59.17%) of tomato growers had young age group. 2. The higher percentage of tomato growers (35.00%) were educated middle school. 3. The higher percentage (41.67%) of tomato growers were having small size of land holding. 4. The higher percentage (56.67%) of tomato growers were 0.501 to 1 ha area. 5. The higher percentage (58.33%) of tomato growers had medium material possession. 6. The higher percentage (63.33%) of tomato growers had medium social participation. 7. The higher percentage (55.83%) of tomato growers had medium annual income. 8. The higher percentage is half (50.00%) of tomato growers were having medium economic motivation. 9. The higher percentage (59.16%) of tomato growers had medium scientific orientation. 10. The higher percentage (53.33%) of tomato growers had utilized medium information sources. 11. The higher percentage (61.67%) of tomato growers had medium extension contact. II. Entrepreneurial behavior of tomato growers. The study revealed that higher percentage of tomato growers (41.67%) had medium entrepreneurial behaviour. III. Relationship between independent variables with dependent variable. The variables Age (X1) had significant but negitive relationship while Education (X2), Size of land holding (X3), Area under tomato crop (X4), Material possession (X5), Social participation (X6), Annual income (X7), Economic motivation (X8), Scientific orientation (X9), Information source utilization (X10) and Extension contact (X11) hadpositive and significant relationship with entrepreneurial behaviour of the tomato growers. IV. Constraints perceived by the tomato growers in production, storage and marketing of tomato. The tomato growers reported the constraints in production like problems viz severe attack of insects/pests, high cost of labours, low production due to climate change, non availability of information regarding technical guidance, lack of training about scientific production technology of tomato and non availability of improved seeds. Regarding the storage of tomato farmers expressed the problems like due to non availability of cold storage farmers could not keep for long time, followed by lack of co-operative cold storage and also lack of private cold storage. Concerning the constraints perceived by tomato growers in marketing like high charges of middleman and brokers commission, low market price of produce, lack of vegetables mandi facilities, lack of minimum support price, lack of processing facilities and lack of transport facilities Suggestions for future work: 1. This study was confined to Sehore block only; hence the results may not be applicable to a large area. For generalization, similar work should be undertaken in other blocks and districts. 2. In this study the dependent and independent variables were limited. therefore more number of variables may be included. 3. Comparative study of tomato growers may be planned for finding actual status of tomato growers and extent of their involvement in entrepreneurial behavior of tomato growers. |
