Description ABSTRACT
The studies on heterosis and combining ability were carried out during 2008-2009
following “line x tester” analysis. Four male sterile lines namely; ms7, ms8, ms9, ms10 and 18 diverse
pollinators as tester were used to produced 72 F1’s. These F1 hybrids along with 22 parental lines were
evaluated during summer (2009) and rainy season (2009) in Randomized Block Design. Observations
were recorded on nine quantitative traits during both the seasons. Highly significant variances for all
the traits indicated the sufficient variability in the parental material for all the characters under study.
The performance of F1 hybrids was much better than the mean performance of parents during both the
crop seasons. Appreciable heterosis was observed in all the characters, except flower weight in
summer and plant height in rainy season. Among male sterile lines, ms8 (summer season) and ms9
(rainy season) proved good general combiners, while testers Spray Mix -1, Bonita Bolero and Safari
Queen were the best general combiners for both the seasons. However cross combinations viz. ms8 x
Hero, ms10 x Hero, ms10 x Cupidon Yellow, ms8 x Double Dwarf Lemon were the best in terms of
specific combining ability during summer. Whereas, during winter the combinations viz. ms9 x
French Bonita-3, ms10 x French Bonita-3, ms9 x Bonita Bolero, ms8 x Sunkist and ms9 x French
Bonita-2 were best specific combiners. The phenotypic coefficient of variation was higher in
magnitude than the genotypic coefficient of variation during both the seasons. The GCA and SCA
effects were found significant for almost all the character. High heritability was observed for
characters number of flowers per plant and flower yield during both the seasons. In both the seasons,
the ratio of s2 GCA/ s2 SCA was less than unity for all the characters showing the preponderance of
dominance variance. Thus suggesting selection in the later generations as more effective. None of the
hybrids performed consistently during both the seasons. The best hybrid in summer season on the
basis of yield per plant was ms8 x FM-786(145.91g/plant) while the best hybrid during rainy season
on the basis of yield per plant was ms10 x French Bonita-1(155.73g/plant).
