Description ABSTRACT
The investigation entitled “Propagation studies of maples (Acer caesium Wall. ex Brandis and A. acuminatum Wall. ex D. Don) of Himachal Pradesh” was carried out in the Department of Silviculture and Agroforestry, Dr. YS Parmar UHF, Nauni (Solan), HP during 2011-2013. The seeds and cuttings collected from Pattidhank (Theog Forest Division) and Larot (Rohru Forest Division) forests were used to conduct four experiments. In the experiment-I, seeds of Acer acuminatum were subjected to five stratification periods of twenty day interval i.e. 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 days; three stratification temperatures i.e. room temperature, 3±10C and -3±10C and finally treated with 0 (water only) and 200 ppm GA3 prior to actual sowing in laboratory (CRD) and nursery (RBD) with three replications each. It was evident that seeds subjected to 60 day stratification at 3±10C and treated with 200 ppm GA3 exhibited significantly better germinability and seedling growth performance in the species. The experiment-II involved a 4x3x3 factorial experiment of four seed storage containers viz., polybag, plastic jar, canvas bag and earthen pot; three storage temperature viz., room temperature, 3±10C and -3±10C; and three storage periods of four month interval i.e. 4, 8 and 12 months to assess the effect on germinability in A. acuminatum. It was observed that seeds stored in plastic jars at 3±10C for four months exhibited significantly best germinability as compared to other treatments.
Similarly, in the 3rd experiment, seeds of A. caesium were subjected to three stratification periods viz., 0, 4 and 8 week; four stratification temperatures viz., room temperature, 3±10C, 0±10C and -3±10C and finally treated with three GA3 concentrations i.e. 0 (water only), 200 ppm and 400 ppm. It was apparent that seeds stratified for eight weeks at 3±10C and treated with 200 ppm GA3 exhibited significantly highest germinability as compared to other treatments. The experiment-IV on cuttage propagation comprising of seven IBA formulations, two species and two pre-conditioning treatments involved a factorial RBD experiment with three replications in the nursery under a shade net house. It was seen that girdled cuttings of A. acuminatum treated with 0.75% IBA + 5% captan + 5% sucrose + talc provided significantly best rooting during the spring season.
