Description |
A research project entitled “Studies on drought tolerance in sunflower genotypes” was conducted with two experiments namely “Drought tolerance of sunflower parental lines at seedling stage” and “Understanding the mechanism of drought tolerance”. The first experiment was carried out at Department of Crop Physiology Laboratory, College of Agriculture, ANGRAU, Rajendranagar. Thirty nine sunflower genotypes were screened by subjecting them to water stress in the laboratory by treating with PEG (Poly ethylene glycol) solution at different concentrations viz., 0.0, -0.2, -0.4, -0.6 and -0.8 MPa. Germination percentage, root length, shoot length and seedling dry weight decreased with increase in osmotic stress. Based on the above characters, DRSF- 113 and EC-602063 were selected as tolerant and GMU-337 and GMU-437 were identified as less tolerant to moisture stress. These genotypes were studied in field experiment. The second experiment was conducted on sandy loam soil at student’s farm, College of Agriculture, ANGRAU, Rajendranagar, during late rabi 2013-14 in a strip plot design. Stress was assigned to main plots viz., control and water stress and constituted sub plots, four sunflower genotypes viz., GMU-337, GMU-437, EC-602063 and DRSF-113. Water stress imposed from 30-65 DAS resulted in decreased plant height, leaf number, days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, LAI, crop growth rate, SCMR values, stomatal conductance, fluorescence, photosynthetic rate, chlorophyll stability index, membrane stability index, while, proline content was increased under moisture stress. The water stress imposition has also negatively influenced yield related attributes like capitulum diameter, capitulum dry weight, total number of seeds per capitulum, test weight seed yield per plant in water stress treatments as compared to control. Among the genotypes DRSF-113 and EC-602063 recorded better values for morphological, physiological characters and yield attributes over other genotypes both under moisture stress and control conditions. Among the four genotypes studied DRSF- 113 and EC-602063 showed better drought tolerance as compared to GMU-337 and GMU-437. |
