Description Studies on hybrid seed production in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) were
carried out at the Main Agricultural Research Station, UAS, Dharwad during kharif 2006.
An experiment was conducted to study the effect of crossing ratio and pollination
time on seed yield and quality in tomato hybrid seed production with four crossing ratios
(3:1,4:1,5:1 and 6:1) and six pollination time (7,8,9,10,11am and 12.00 noon). Significantly
higher fruit set (44.32%), fruit yield/plant (1136.18g), seed yield/plant (7.38g), germination
(85.47%), seedling vigour index (1353) recorded in crossing ratio of 4:1and lowest in 6:1.
Among pollination treatments, pollination at 10.00 am recorded higher fruit set
(43.02%), fruit yield/plant (1102.45g), seed yield/plant (7.66g), germination (86.58%) and
vigour index (1387) lowest in 12.00 noon (31.73%, 702.56g, 5.80g, 82.06% and 1158,
respectively).
Among the combination of 4:1 crossing ratio with pollination at 10.00 am recorded
significantly higher fruit set (57.15%), fruit yield/plant (1502.98), seed yield/plant (8.39g)
and lowest values (16.76%, 536.38g and 4.69g, respectively) recorded in 6:1 crossing ratio
with pollination at 12.00 noon.
Another experiment was conducted to study the influence of growth regulators and
fruit retention on seed yield and quality parameters with three growth regulators (GA3, NAA
and control) and four fruit retention treatments (10,15,20 and all fruits/plant).
Among growth regulators GA3 100 ppm recorded significantly higher fruit yield/plant
(1206.01g), seed yield/plant (8.12 g) and germination (90.92%) and vigour index (1424) over
control (1101.69g, 7.36g, 87.60% and 1301, respectively)
Retention of all fruits recorded higher fruit yield (1824.79g) and seed yield/plant
(11.38g) compared to 10,15 and 20 fruits. Germination (91.51%) and vigour index (1460)
were significantly higher in 10 fruits per plant compared all fruits treatments.
Among the treatment combinations, GA3 100 ppm with retention of all fruits recorded
significantly higher fruit yield/plant (1898.10g), seed yield/plant (11.95g). vigour index
(1501) was significantly higher in GA3 100 ppm with 10 fruits compared to other treatment
combinations.
