Genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance, correlation and path coefficient for 13 yield contributing traits and 5 nutritional traits were studied in 36 genotypes of cowpea. The study indicated existence of considerable amount of genetic variability for all the characters studied. The mean range was recorded for traits viz., days to 50% flowering (32.3-55.6), number of pods/plant (12.57-46.47), number of seeds/pod (7.70-19.47), pod weight (5.87-13.75), pod yield/plant (95.73-290.11g) with the Maximum pod yield/plant was noted in Vijayanthi while least in CP-13 whereas the highest pod yield/ha was recorded in genotype CP-5 (141.74 q/ha). The highest protein rich genotype was recorded as Pusa Sukomal (6.43%) while least in CP-47 (2.35%). The highest calcium rich genotype was CP-24 (214.67 ppm) while lowest was Vijayanthi (70.33ppm). The highest iron rich genotype was recorded as Vijayanthi (139.31ppm) while least in CP 35-1 (26.34 ppm). The richest genotype for zinc content was observed as Vijayanthi (82.37ppm) while least was CP-14 (17.21ppm). The richest genotype for antioxidant capacity (μmol trolox equivalent) in fresh pod (dry weight basis) was observed as Vijayanthi (9.37) while least was Pusa Sukomal (5.01). The highest phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) and Genotypic Coefficient of Variation (GCV) were recorded for number of pod per cluster (50.95 and 45.33), followed by plant height (37.19 and 36.87) and pod yield/ plant (35.73 and 34.92). Broad-sense heritability (h2b) values were observed with a range of 41.30% to 89.70%. Number of seed per pod (41.30%) was the least heritable trait while number of pod/plant (89.70%) was the most heritable trait. The strong significant positive correlation of pod yield/plant manifested with number of pods/plant, number of pods/cluster and pod weight was only due to its direct contribution towards pod yield/ha, there by indicating a true association and could be taken as a major component trait for the improvement of pod yield. |
