Description |
This study seeks to explore the effectiveness of training programmes conducted by KVK among the farmers and evaluate the development amongst them. This study entitled “Impact of KVK Training Towards Socio-economic Upliftment of Farmers in Jagatsinghpur District Odisha” was conducted in Tirtol and Kujangablocks of Jagatsinghpur district taking 120 respondents. The objective of study was,(1) To analyze the socio-economic profile of the farmers undergone training at KVK since last five years. (2)To analyze the extent of knowledge gained through training and use of technologies in their farm activities. (3)To study the extent of development of the farmers after receiving the training from KVK. (4)To examine the constraints perceived by the farmers in attending training programme and suggestions to combat them. The data collected were analyzed with suitable statistical tools such as frequency, mean score, gap percentage, and standard deviation, coefficient of variance, coefficient of correlation, multiple regression and path analysis to reveal the major findings. Majority of the members 78.3% of respondents were of middle aged group i.e. 36-55 years and with education up to high school and all the members were married. Majority of respondents were from nuclear family type with below 5 members. The main occupation of the members was farming with land holding of less than 1 hectare. Most of the members were having average annual income and majority of the respondents have better social participation. The respondents were mostly medium to low socio-economic status for which trainings are the only means for their upliftment. The age, social participation, cosmopoliteness and media exposure of the respondents had consistency than other socio-economic background of the respondents and annual income, possession of farm power, occupation, family type and family size and holding size had greater variability. Socio-economic background of the respondents found to have influence in increasing the knowledge level of the respondents on various farm activities. The best fitted regression analysis could explain (47.80%) of the total socio-economic variance on increasing knowledge level of the respondents on various farm activities. There was overall adoption of (101.52%) on horticultural crops, still (45.58) % gaps exist. Socio-economic characteristics of the respondents found to have influence in increasing the adoption level of the respondents. Correlation analysis indicated that socio-economic characteristics of the respondents had influence on various aspects of developments; regression analysis could explain (57.90%) of the total variance on developments. Important and pertinent constraints of the trainees were; no storage facilities for perishable produce, ignorance about crop insurance, survey analysis not made, less training for farm women, quality inputs not available locally, inadequate demonstration to develop confidence, high cost of technology, credit facility not easily available, weak extension system at village level, participatory approach not followed, not ensuring quality inputs, labour intensive technology . Though there is increase in knowledge and adoption of the technologies by the farmers under taking training at KVKs, but significant impact of the training have been observed. However, it was found out that KVK Training plays an important role in socio-economic development of farmers.
