Description |
The present study “Assessing the Viability of Establishing Mango Processing Unit in Karimnager District of Andhra Pradesh” was undertaken mainly to study the costs and returns of mango production and mango processing. The main objectives of the study are: 1. To study the trends in area, production and productivity of mango in Karimnagar district. 2. To study the various marketing channels and the price spread in mango marketing. 3. To study the viability of establishing mango processing unit in the area. Mango (Mangifera indica), the king of fruit, is grown in India in almost all the states. India shares about 40 per cent of total mango production in the world, contributing 35 per cent of area and 40 per cent of production in the country. Andhra Pradesh tops in production with Krishna, Chittoor, Vijayanagaram, East Godavari, West Godavari, Nellore, Karimnagar and Adilabad having large area under mango cultivation. There is a huge scope for establishing mango processing unit in Karimnagar district which is having 14680 ha area under mango cultivation and 1.17 lakh tonnes of production during 2006-07. Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh was purposively selected as it is one of the important mango growing areas in the state. Four mandals viz., Karimnagar, Choppdandi, Husnabad, Jagtial were selected and from each mandal five villages were identified for the study and from each village five farmers were selected thus making a total sample of 100 farmers. The information from the farmers regarding cost and returns of the mango orchard was collected with the help of pre-tested questionnaire by personnel interview method and information regarding cost and returns of the mango processing unit was collected from mango pulp making unit at Sattupalli mandal in Khammam district. Averages and percentages were used to analyze the data to arrive at valid conclusion. Costs and returns have been calculated on per acre basis. Establishment cost of Rs.18770 per acre was incurred upto pre-bearing period (upto 4th year). The per acre maintenance cost of mango orchard was Rs. 5050 from 5th year to 10th year, Rs. 5600 from 11th year to 20th year and Rs. 4250 from 21st year to 40th year. The total per acre cost of production was Rs. 9111.67. Considering the price of Rs. 4000 per tonne, net returns of Rs. 6888.33 per acre were obtained. In the total samples, marketing channel one which is selling produce to pre-harvest contractors appeared to be most profitable compared to direct marketing called as marketing channel two. Total costs, gross returns and net returns of mango pulp unit worked out to be Rs.1.15 crore, Rs.1.42 crore and Rs. 25.32 lakh respectively. Break-even output was 308.68 tonnes. |
