Description In the present investigation, the information on heterosis, combining ability and phenotypic stability was obtained in respect to pod yield and yield components in cowpea. The material for the present study comprised of eight females, eleven males and resultant 88 hybrids, tested in randomized block design with three replications under three environments (date of sowing) viz., 5th February, 2004 (E1), 20th February, 2004 (E2) and 6th March, 2004 (E3) at Instructional Farm, Department of Agronomy, Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh.
The pooled analysis of variance revealed significant differences among genotypes, parents, hybrids and parents vs. hybrids for all the characters except protein content in parents and test weight and protein content in parents vs. hybrids comparison. The crosses JCPL-111 x Lola, JCPL-24 x JCPL-141 and JCPL-103 x JCPL-120 exhibited high heterosis over better parent and standard check (Pusa
Phalguni) for pod yield per plant. The high heterosis for pod yield resulted from high heterosis for pod length and number of pods per plant. In general, it might be inferred that magnitude of heterotic effects were high for pod yield per plant, pod length, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and plant height; moderate for test weight; and low for days to 50 % flowering, days to first picking, days to last picking and protein content. Both additive and non-additive types of gene effects were involved in the genetic control of all the characters. The magnitude of additive variance was relatively higher than the non-additive variance for all the characters except pod length, protein content and number of pods per plant. The results further revealed that most of the superior cross combinations had included atleast one parent with high general combining ability effect for almost all the characters. Parents JCPL-24, JCPL-111, JCPL-113, JCPL-120 and JCPL-141 were good general combiners for pod yield per plant and other yield components. Looking to the crosses, JCPL-111 x JCPL-120 registered high specific combining ability effect for pod yield per plant and number of pods per plant and JCPL-24 x JCPL-141 expressed high specific combining ability effect for pod yield and number of seeds per pod. On the basis of per se performance, heterobeltiosis and specific combining ability effect, three crosses viz., JCPL-111 x JCPL-79, JCPL-24 x JCPL-141 and JCPL-103 x JCPL-120 were found promising for pod yield per plant.
Genotype x environmental interactions registered significant differences for all the characters, suggesting that genotypes interacted
considerably with environments. Higher magnitude of g x e (linear)
variance as compared to g x e (non-linear) variance for all the characters,
except for days to 50 % flowering and protein content, suggested that
genotypes differed for their linear regression on environmental index.
However, non-linear component was higher in magnitude for days to 50
% flowering and protein content indicating that prediction of performance
would be difficult for both these characters.
On the basis of mean ( x ), regression coefficient (bi) and
deviation from regression (S2di), it is concluded that three parents viz.,
JCPL-24, JCPL-111 and JCPL-120 and hybrid, JCPL-24 x JCPL-141 were
found widely adapted for pod yield and yield components in present
investigation.
It is concluded from present investigations that on the basis
of per se, heterobeltiosis, combining ability and stability, the parent
JCPL-24 and the hybrid JCPL-24 x JCPL-141 was the most promising for
pod yield per plant and some of its component traits in cowpea under
Junagadh conditions.
