Description |
The field experiment was conducted at RARS, Bijapur, to evaluate and find out the profitable rabi sorghum + chickpea intercropping systems in green gram ? rabi sorghum + chickpea sequence cropping system under sara border strips in Vertisols under dryland condition during 2011-2012. The green gram residue after harvest of pods was incorporated prior to rabi cropping. The experiment was laidout with seven treatments replicated three times in split plot design. The sara method of in situ moisture conservation practice recorded significantly higher Rabi sorghum and chickpea grain yield (1070 kg ha-1 and 669 kg ha-1) compared to farmer?s practice (929 kg ha-1and 568 kg ha-1). Over moisture conservation practices, among intercropping systems Rabi sorghum + chickpea (1:4) recorded significantly higher grain yield of both the crops (1191 kg ha-1 and 744 kg ha-1). Further, Rabi sorghum + chickpea (1:4) intercropping system with sara method of in situ moisture conservation practice proved its significant superiority with respect to grain yield (1277 kg ha-1 and 801 kg ha-1), net returns (33250 Rs/ha), nutrient balance, water balance and energy balance compared to rest of the treatments. The overall effect of the investigation provided an indication of sustained soil fertility, productivity and improvement of nutritional stands of the forming community. |
