Description |
An investigation entitled, “Effect of different seed priming substances on germination, seedling growth and field performance of onion (Allium cepa L.) cv. AFLR under coastal zone of Odisha” was carried out both in form of laboratory and field experiment in the Department of Vegetable Science, College of Agriculture, OUAT, Bhubaneswar, during rabi 2015-16. The objective of the study was to find out the efficacy of priming on seed germination, seedling vigour, crop growth and yield of onion cv. AFLR. The experiment was laid out in Factorial Completely Randomized Design (FCRD) in laboratory condition while Factorial Completely Randomized Block Design (FCRBD) in open field condition with 30 treatment combinations (10 treatments including control x 3 durations) replicated 2 times. The treatment consisted of seed priming with 0.01% vinegar (T1), 0.5M KNO3 (T2), 2.5% KCl (T3), 1% ZnSO4 (T4), 2% KH2PO4 (T5), 25 ppm GA3 (T6), 50 ppm GA3 (T7), 100 ppm GA3 (T8), distilled water (T9) and control (T10) along with 3 durations of treatment i.e 6 hour (D1), 12 hour (D2) and 24 hour (D3). The dry or non primed seeds were used as control. The result of the present study revealed that priming of onion seeds with different growth regulators and chemicals significantly influenced various parameters related to germination, growth of seedling in nursery, field performance as well as bulb yield and quality of onion. Seeds primed with GA3 @ 25 ppm for 6 hour (D1T6) significantly increased the germination percentage both in laboratory (84.00% against 60.30% in control) and field condition (79.00% against 54.33% in control) reducing the time of emergence (2 days for initial germination and 3 days for 50% germination). Significant increase was noticed in root length, shoot length, seed vigour, number of leaves, stem girth, leaf girth, dry and fresh weight of seedling over control. Besides this, in the field condition significant increase in plant height, leaf number, stem girth and chlorophyll content was also noticed at 45, 90 and 105 days after transplanting in this treatment. The treatment also recorded significant increase in marketable yield (171.92 q ha-1) and total yield (253.40 q ha-1) as well as bulb weight (70.65g), bulb height (polar diameter-6.79cm), bulb girth (16.40cm) and TSS content (14.33⁰ brix) of the bulb over control, with higher additional return per additional rupee invested (Rs.89.50). Moreover, seed priming with GA3 @ 50 ppm (D1T7) and KNO3 0.5M for 6 hour (D1T2) showed significant effect on enhancing germination behavior seedling characteristics, field performance as well as yield and quality of onion as compared to non primed seeds or control. So further study may be taken up in this aspect to have a broader view on different priming techniques in order to generate recommendations for the farmers. |
