Microirrigation is one of the latest innovations for applying water and represents a definite advancement in irrigation technology. The high initial cost is the major hindrance in popularizing this irrigation system. The main objective of this study is to develop optimization models for designing different types of pipe networks of microirrigation subunits. This thesis presents the developments of optimization models to design pipe networks of single size single lateral and manifold, two pipe sizes single lateral and manifold, single size paired laterals and manifolds, two pipe sizes paired laterals and manifolds along with submain and mainline. The pipeline hydraulics and economic parameters related to the annual energy cost of operating the system have been incorporated in the models by using appropriate formulae. Linear and nonlinear optimization models have been developed for designing pipe networks of microirrigation subunits. The objective functions are formulated to minimize the total annual cost per unit area formed by laterals and manifold of a subunit. The optimization models design the fixed and computed subunit sizes along with corner and central feeding of manifolds by imposing appropriate constraints of lengths, allowable pressure head variation, conservation of energy and nonnegative. The sensitivity analyses for time of irrigation, irrigation interval, emitter discharge, emission uniformity, allowable pressure head variation, slope of the land and number of subunit were carried out to see the effect on optimal solution of the design. The enumeration method was used to check the validity and efficiency of the developed optimization model. The applicability of the developed optimization models is shown by solving design examples using LINGO solver. The developed optimization models result in economical and efficient design of pipe networks over enumeration method and can be easily used for designing pipe networks for any conditions of microirrigation subunits. |
