Studies were conducted to determine the incidence of Retention of fetal membranes (RFM) in Holstein Friesian (HF) cows as well as the risk factors associated with RFM in dairy cattle. Studies were also made to assess the course and characteristics of uterine involution following RFM in dairy cows. Further, the influence of PGF2α on the course and characteristic of uterine involution in cows with RFM was also determined. The overall incidence of RFM in HF dairy cows was determined as 8.80 per cent and age and parity of the cows were determined to significantly influence the incidence. The incidence of RFM following dystocia was assessed as 15.63 per cent and its recurrence rate as 8.03 per cent. The uterus following normal calving and expulsion of fetal membranes appeared to have completed the involution by day 30 postpartum and none of the cows exhibited any evidence of subclinical endometritis by day 40 postpartum. However, transrectal palpation, ultrasonographic and endometrial cytology studies indicated that the course and characteristic of uterine involution were abnormal following RFM and upto 40 per cent of the cows with RFM exhibited evidence of subclinical postpartum endometritis. A single injection of PGF2α on day 20 postpartum in cows with RFM failed to influence the course and characteristics of uterine involution or the incidence of subclinical endometritis. It was concluded that the RFM is associated with altered course of uterine involution and significantly reduces the subsequent reproductive performance and that the studies were needed to assess if multiple injections of PGF2α have more beneficial effect. |
