Description The present study was carried out on Indian mustard variety RH-0749 at Research Area of Oilseeds
Section, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar
during 2015-2016. A total of 16 insect species visited Indian mustard flowers viz., 8 Hymenopterans, 5
Dipterans, 2 Lepidopterans, and 1 Hemipteran. The abundance (bees/m2/5 min) of A. dorsata was
highest (4.29) followed by A. cerana indica (2.82), A. mellifera (2.33) and A. florea (1.74). Abundance
was maximum (5.86 bees/m2/5 min) at 1200-1400 h of the day. A. cerana indica foraged maximum
number of flowers per minute (13.92) followed by A. mellifera (12.86), A. dorsata (10.35) and A.
florea (6.99). Foraging rate (flowers/min) was maximum at 1200-1400 h (14.11), while minimum at
0800-1000 h (7.54). Time spent per flower (sec) was maximum (6.08) by A. florea followed by A.
dorsata (3.41), A. mellifera (2.60) and A. cerana indica (2.33). The maximum time spent per flower
(4.20) was at 1400-1600 h. Nectar or pollen gatherers were maximum in A. dorsata (37.25% and
26.00%, respectively), while both nectar and pollen gatherers were maximum in A. cerana indica
(48.50%). Nectar foraging, pollen foraging and both nectar and pollen foraging was maximum at 1200-
1400 h (47.75%), 0800-1000 h (44.86%) and 1400-1600 h (53.75%), respectively. Out of the total
foragers, top workers were maximum in A. cerana indica (90.25%), while side workers were maximum
in A. florea (40.50%). Based on pollination index, A. dorsata was the most efficient pollinator of Indian
mustard variety RH-0749 flowers with pollination index of 7363.65 followed by A. mellifera
(3472.14), A. cerana indica (3323.45) and A. florea (518.99) under agro-ecological conditions of Hisar
(Haryana). On an average, B. juncea flower produced 0.055 mg of dry nectar-sugar and 0.913 joules
energy. Effect of different modes of pollination on yield parameters of Indian mustard showed that the
maximum number of pods/plant, pod length, pod setting (%), number of seeds/pod, thousand seed
weight, seed yield/plot, seed germination (%), seed vigour and oil content (508.72 pods/plant, 5.69 cm,
86.32%, 15.66 seeds/pod, 6.87 g, 17.63 q/ha, 89.20%, 628.12 and 39.42%, respectively) were in open
pollination followed by that in bee pollination (404.56 pods/plant, 4.92 cm, 78.33%, 14.26 seeds/pod,
6.39 g, 15.57 q/ha, 85.20%, 542.54 and 38.36%, respectively) and pollinators’ exclusion (287.56
pods/plant, 3.89 cm, 65.87%, 12.24 seeds/pod, 5.30 g, 13.01 q/ha, 78.40%, 385.54 and 37.04%,
respectively). Seed yield increased by 35.50 and 19.66 per cent in open pollinated and A. mellifera
pollinated plots, respectively as compared to pollinators’ exclusion.
