Description Investigation on “Performance of castor intercropped with
vegetables under rainfed conditions” was carried out during kharif, 2002
at the Agricultural College Farm, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. The soil
was clay loam in texture with pH 8.3. It was medium in available N (290
kg/ha), P (13 kg/ha) and K (140 kg/ha).contents. .The crops were sown on
15 July. A total of 429.8mm rainfall was received during the crop growth
period. The experiment was conducted in Randomized Block Design with
nine treatments and four replications.
The results showed that the intercropping of three rows of cluster
bean and two rows of carrot between castor rows spaced at 90cm x 60cm
were highly competitive. They reduced the plant height, number of
branches, leaf area and phytomass per plant of castor significantly from
30 DAS till harvest.
The competitive effect of intercropped french bean was feable and
occasional on these vegetative parameters of castor except on the number
of branches per plant. Dolichos bean had least competitive effect on
growth of castor. Castor produced significantly less number of spikes per plant by
intercropping three rows of cluster bean and two rows of carrot or french
bean. The length of primary spikes and number of capsules per spike also
reduced significantly. Intercropping two rows of dolichos bean had no
negative effect on these yield components of castor.
Castor intercropped with cluster bean produced significantly low
yield of 1246 kg ha-1 compared to 1640 kg ha-1 by the sole crop.
Intercropping of carrot also reduced the yield of castor significantly to
1380 kg ha-1. Castor intercropped with french bean or dolichos bean
yielded on par with sole crop. The stalk yield of castor was significantly
low by intercropping cluster bean, carrot or french bean.
The phytomass production per plant and yield components of the
intercrops were substantially reduced compared to the respective sole
crops.
Maximum castor bean equivalent yield of 2517 kg ha-1 was
realized by intercropping two rows of carrot. This was significantly
superior to sole castor. The productive efficiency of intercropping
vegetables in castor exceeded unity. Maximum LER of 1.51 was
obtained by intercropping castor with dolichos bean.
The SLERs and LERs also held that intercropping of dolichos
bean provided maximum desired yield goals of castor compared to its
sole production as well as the total productivity. The intercropping of
castor with the vegetables fetched more net profit per hectare compared to
the sole crops. The RNR indices indicated that the net profits by
intercropping cluster bean, french bean, dolichos bean or carrot in castor
were not significantly different amongst themselves.
