Description The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding two non protein nitrogen (NPN) sources on the growth performance of lambs fed diets based on maize grain and finger millet straw. In a growth trial of 12 weeks duration, eighteen lambs were divided into three groups consisting of six lambs each and were fed either a standard diet (T1) containing finger millet (Eleucine corocana) straw and compounded feed mixture or a diet containing urea (8.0 per cent) treated finger millet straw (T2) or a diet containing finger millet straw and SRNP supplemented in the compounded feed mixture (T3). The experimental diet comprised of finger millet straw as basal roughage and a compounded feed mixture. There was no significant difference in the average daily gain, feed DMI and nitrogen balance for the lambs fed either urea or SRNP indicating that both urea and SRNP were comparable when incorporated in the diet in a slow release form. The digestibility of nutrients was significantly higher in urea treated group. The in vitro ME was higher and potential gas production (D) and rate of fermentation (k) were lower in urea treated straw than untreated straw. The ME and rate of fermentation (k) was higher in SRNP supplemented total mixed ration and the potential gas production (D) was lower than urea treated total mixed ration. However, the improved digestibility, higher ME, or rate of fermentation with urea or SRNP supplementation was not reflected in the growth performance of the lambs. It was concluded that the effect of supplementation of both sources of NPN viz; urea treated finger millet straw or SRNP supplemented in the compounded feed mixture, were comparable on the growthperformance of lambs fed diets based on finger millet straw and maize.
