Description |
The present study entitled, “Evaluation of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes for different sowing dates under irrigated conditions” was conducted during rabi season 2010- 2011 on sandy loam soil of Agricultural Research Institute (ARI), Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. The treatments consisted of four sowing dates viz., D1 (15 th October), D2 (1st November), D3 (15th November) and D4 (1 st December) and three genotypes namely V1 (Raj 4037), V2 (HP 4080) and V3 (PDW 315). The experiment was laid out in split plot design with different sowing dates as main factor and genotypes as sub factors with three replications. Growth parameters viz., plant height, tillers m-2 and dry matter production were measured at periodical intervals. Likewise yield attributes viz., ears m-2, ear length, grains ear-1, test weight, grain yield, straw yield and harvest index were measured after harvest. Nutrient (N, P and K) uptake was estimated at harvest both in grain and straw. Thus obtained growth and yield data were analysed adopting standard statistical methods for drawing valid conclusions. The initial and final plant population of wheat was not significantly influenced by sowing dates, genotype and interaction of both. Regarding growth parameters, at 60 and 90 days after sowing plant height was significantly maximum with D3 (15th November) sowing than the D4 (1 st December) but on par with D2 (1 st November) and D1 (15th October) sowings. Whereas at 30 and 90 days after sowing plant height was non-significant on all sowing dates. Among the genotype V3 (PDW 315) obtained significantly higher plant height at 90 days after sowing and at harvest over V2 (HP 4080) and V1 (RAJ 4037). Whereas at 30 days after sowing V1 (RAJ 4037) recorded higher plant height. Dry matter production was significantly highest in D3 (15th November) sowing than D4 (1st December) and D1 (15th October) sowings but on par with D2 (1st November) sowing at all the crop growth stages except in 60 days after sowing. Among the genotypes V2 (HP 4080) recorded significantly higher dry matter at 90 days after sowing over V1 (RAJ 4037) but on par with V3 (PDW 315) whereas at 30, 60 days after sowing and at harvest dry matter production was found to be non-significant. Number of tillers m-2 was significantly highest with D3 (15th November) sowing than the D4 (1st December) sowing but comparable with D2 (1st November) and D1 (15th October) sowing at all the crop growth stages except in 30 DAS. At all the crop growth stages all the genotypes produced statistically similar number of tillers. Similarly the yield attributing characters viz., ears m-2 and ear length were recorded higher values with D3 (15th November) sowing compared to D4 (1 st December sowing) but on par with D2 (1st November) and D1 (15th October) sowings. Whereas the influence of genotypes was found to be non-significant with genotypes and interaction of sowing dates and genotypes on ears m-2 but significantly more ear length was obtained with V2 (HP 4080) over the V3(PDW 315) but comparable with V1 (Raj 4037). Significantly more number of grains were recorded with D3 (15th November) over D4 (1 st December) but on par number of grains ear -1 were recorded with D2 (1st November) sowing which was on par with D1 (15th October) sowing. Among the genotypes V1 (Raj 4037) and V3 (PDW 315) recorded comparable ear length but significantly lower than V2 (HP 4080). On par test weight values were also recorded with D1 (15th October), D2 (1st November) and D3 (15 th November) sowings over D4 (1st December) sowing which was found to be significantly lower than the other three dates of sowings whereas the 1000 grain weight was found to be non-significant with genotypes and interaction of sowing dates and genotypes. The effect of harvest index was found to be non-significant with sowing dates, genotypes and interaction of both. The grain and straw yield were statistically high with D3 (15 th November) sowing which was on par with D2 (1st November) sowing but significantly superior over D4 (1st December) and D1 (15th October) sowings. Among the genotypes V3 (PDW 315) and V2 (HP 4080) recorded comparable yields but significantly higher than V1 (Raj 4037). The interaction between sowing dates and genotypes on grain yield and straw yield was significant. Among the genotypes and sowing dates the genotype V3 (PDW 315) obtained maximum grain and straw yield at D3 (15th November) sowing followed by V2 (HP 4080) at D3 (15th November) sowing From the above study it can be concluded that 1. The genotypes PDW 315 and V2 (HP 4080) were found to be suitable for Southern Telangana Zone of Andhra Pradesh. 2. Sowing of wheat from 1 st November and 15th November was found to be the optimum time for Southern Telangana Zone of Andhra Pradesh. 3. The genotypes PDW 315 and HP 4080 performed well when sown on 1st November and 15th November sowing by obtaining maximum yields whereas under delayed sowing 1 st December PDW 315 performed well compared to HP 4080 under Southern Telangana Zone of agro climatic conditions of Andhra Pradesh. |
