Description Banana (Musa paradisiac L.) is a fruit of tropics known as "Apple of paradise".
India is the largest producer of banana in the world (21%). The study was conducted in
special APMC for fruits and vegetables, to analyze the arrival and prices of banana, to
examine the structure and conduct of banana in regulated and to study the retail sale
pattern and the consumer preferences for banana. The result of the study indicates that the
estimated trend in arrival of banana has declined during the period from 2001 to 2010,
while prices of banana showed increasing trend during the same period. The compound
growth rate was found to be significant for prices and for arrival it showed a non
significant value. The resulting co-efficient of variation in arrivals and prices was found
to be almost stable for both arrival and prices in the market. The study clearly reveals that
nearly 90 per cent of banana fruit is from neighboring states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra
Pradesh and Maharashtra and the rest 10 per cent is within the state. Gini concentration
ratio shows that the buying pattern of banana was highly equitable as evidence by Gini
ratio of 0.97, which is close to the unity. Nearly 70 per cent of the retailers are purchasing
both elakki and grand naine varieties of banana through wholesale market, Bangalore and
the remaining are directly purchasing from farmers. The survey among consumers in the
Bangalore city shows that the share of banana in total fruit consumption is around 52 per
cent. The consumers in Bangalore city prefer grand naine and elakki varieties to the
extent of 87 per cent. The study clearly indicates that there is a good demand for banana
and this provides an opportunity for the farmers in the state to undertake banana
cultivation.
