Description The present study “Impact of Self Groups (SHG) on Household Groups on the Household Nutrition in SAT villages of Prakasam District AP was aimed to study the impact of SHG on socioeconomic and nutritional status of the selected households and to compare the nutritional status of SHG households with Non SHG households of the two villages of ICRISAT (VDSA) JC Agrharam and Pamidipadu in Prakasam District.
Sixty SHG and 15 Non SHG households were selected as experimental and control households respectively from each of the two villages making a total of 120 SHG and 30 Non SHG. The SHG women is the chief respondent .In each of the two villages 60 SHG women respondents and 15 Non SHG women respondents were interviewed. Socioeconomic status of both SHG and Non SHG HH was assessed by collecting data or information on demographic profile such as age, gender marital status, caste, occupation and income source, assets and expenditure on clothing, education and health per year.
Nearly 55% of SHG households and 60% belong to BC, 30% of SHG households and 40% of Non SHG household belong to 40% OC caste group and only among SHG households nearly 15% of SC. Majority of the SHG respondents about 34 % were illiterate and among Non SHG households it was grater about 42 % respectively then followed by high school education of the respondents 27% among SHG households and 19 % among Non SHG households. Nearly 15% of SHG households were primary school educated and where only 8% of Non SHG household respondents were primary school educated. About 10% of SHG household members attended college and 14% of Non SHG household
members attended college, nearly 8% of the SHG household members are doing their intermediate and 7% of Non SHG household members doing intermediate
Majority of the SHG 39 % and 38 % of Non SHG household members both men and woman were unemployed followed by agriculture labour 29 % among SHG household member and 33 % among Non SHG household members. Nearly 26.6 % of SHG household and 43.3% of Non SHG households belong to low income range of Rs. 20,000 - 60,000/- per year and about 30% of SHG household, 23.3% belong to medium income range of 60,000 -1 lakh per year and about 43.3% among SHG and 33.3% among Non SHG belong to high income range that is above 1 lakh per year. Nearly 91.6% of SHG households and 93.3% of Non SHG households had own house and 8.3% of SHG households and 6.6% of Non SHG households live in a rented house. Housing with all facilities including good ventilation, drinking water and toilet facility about 59.1% of SHG households and 63.3% of Non SHG households have good housing facilities. Ownership immovable assets of SHG households 97% and among Non SHG 93% have own house. Among SHG households 68% and 77% of Non SHG have land ownership this indicate that in Non SHG household are financially sound than SHG household. The ownership movable assets about 40 % among SHG and 50% among Non SHG households rare cattle and earn money and 8 % only among SHG household rare poultry. All most nearly similar percentage among both SHG and Non SHG households own a two wheeler 18 % and 17 % and in ownership of electronic appliances both groups.
Expenditure spent on food yearly was Rs.10000-25000 /- among SHG household was 34 % and Non SHG household was 43 % and amount of Rs.25000 – 50000/- spent among SHG household was 44 % and Non SHG household was 37 % and amount of Rs.50000-1 lakh was spent among SHG was 18% and Non SHG household was 17 % respectively and amount spent above 1 lakh was 4 % among SHG and 3 % among Non SHG households. The expenditure on education yearly below Rs.30000/- was spent SHG was 93 % and 90 % among Non SHG and amount of Rs.30000-60000/- spent among SHG was 4 % and Non SHG was 7 % and amount of above Rs.60000/- spent among SHG and Non SHG household was 3 % and the expenditure on clothing yearly of Rs.1000-5000/- was spent SHG was 64 % and 77 % among Non SHG and amount of Rs.5000-10000/- was spent among SHG is 28% and Non SHG was 20 % and amount of above Rs.10000/- spent among SHG was 8 % and Non SHG household was 3 % and the expenditure on health yearly of below Rs.500/- spent SHG was 95 % and 97 % among Non SHG and amount of Rs.500-5000/- was spent among SHG was 4 % and Non SHG was 3 % and amount of above Rs.5000 /-spent only among SHG was 1 % respectively. There was no significant difference between SHG and Non SHG HH expenditures except for expenditure on clothing.
Nutritional status assessment mainly deals with complete household’s anthropometric, clinical and dietary assessment done on subsample of 30 households along with household anthropometric, clinical and dietary assessment of SHG and Non SHG. Anthropometric measurements height, weight and mid-upper arm circumference measurements were taken for all the members of SHG and Non SHG HH. Clinical assessment was done to observe signs and symptoms of deficiency symptoms. Dietary assessment was done using food weighment, food frequency and dietary diversity. The major nutrient intake and food groups consumption was estimated along with frequency of
consumption of each food item from nine food groups there by dietary diversity score was obtained.
