Description |
Mites have a signi cant place among the ectoparasites infesting birds. Mite lives on the skin, feathers and epidermis and feeds on blood and epidermis, thus causing irritation, restlessness, weakness, reduction in feed intake, loss of weight and poor egg laying capacity (Alwar and Lalitha, 1974; Nursal Aksen, 2011). The skin lesions predispose the birds for secondary bacterial infection which leads to death of the bird in some cases. The tropical fowl mite Ornithonyssus bursa lives mainly on uff of feathers especially around the vent region and infestation of this causes shedding of feather and decrease in productivity. The present study reports the occurrence of mite infestation in a commercial Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) farm. |
