Description |
Professionalism is the composition of conduct, aims or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or professional person. Students who are oriented to the professional world in advance of entering the workforce often experience smoother transition between school and the work place, greater achievement during service and enhanced self-esteem. Home Science as a professional field offers specialization in five different disciplines to keep in conformity with changing times to produce enthusiastic and resourceful Home Science graduates through this professional course but the professionalism in students is still a hidden factor in almost everywhere. Keeping this in view, the present study was conceived to develop an index of professionalism in Home Science Education by identifying the perceptions of teachers who taught the courses, on the indicators of professionalism and achievement of these perceptions by students. Exploratory research design was undertaken for the present study. Teachers from the faculty of Home Science and students from 4th year and 3rd year of College of Home Science were selected purposively for the study. The data was collected through inventory and questionnaire method which was tabulated and subjected to appropriate statistical tests for analysis. Following finding emerged from the study. The findings revealed that majority of the students in both 4th and 3rd years were in 20-22 year age group, belonging to nuclear families with second ordinal position. With regard to fathers’ educational qualification, the data revealed majority of them were graduate. Unlike fathers most of the mothers were illiterate while those who were educated were having education till 10th or intermediate level, while majority of the fathers were employed and majority of the mothers were home maker. A large number of students were from Telugu and English medium in both 3rd and 4th year while a very few were from Hindi medium with percentage of marks in 10th and 12th standard varying in between fair (55-65%) to very good (75-85%) category having active engagement in co-curricular activities. It was found that majority of the students were in medium followed by high level of creativity, self confidence, academic achievements, achievement motivation and career orientation. Technical/functional competencies were found highest in 4th year and pure challenge competencies in 3rd year in the field of career. With regard to the perception of the teacher’s towards professionalism in Home Science Education it was found that all the teachers felt professionalism in their disciplines through various courses. The disciplines, FDNT and HDFS were close to each other and higher when compared to other three disciplines in terms of professionalism. Similarly, the departments of RMCS, TXAD and HECM were little closer, with a minute difference. Creating skills were perceived to the maximum extent in FDNT & HDFS, while Evaluation Skills in FDNT & TXAD. The teachers in department of HDFS, perceived maximum Applying Skills than any other departments while Evaluation Skills were perceived less by RMCS teachers. With respect to the student’s self-assessment of professionalism it was observed that the student’s found professionalism in them up to some extent but not up to the required level as perceived by the teachers. The t values for analyzing difference between teacher’s perception and student’s performance also showed significant difference. The analysis of professionalism between 4th and 3rd year students showed non-significant difference. Thus both 4th and 3rd year were at the same level of professionalism. The correlation values for 4th year indicated positive correlation between achievement motivation and applying and analysis skills. Academic achievement was positively correlated with evaluation skills. Age was found to have significant relationship with most of the professional skills namely understanding, applying and evaluation skills. Similarly Co-curricular achievements and hobbies were found having positive correlation with creating and analysis skills. While in case of 3rd year achievement motivation was found to be positively correlated with understanding skills. Age was found to be positively related with all the skills except analysis skills. Co-curricular achievements were also found to be significantly related with creating applying and evaluation skills. xiv Interests of the students were seen to have positive correlation with analysis skills. Hobbies were seen related with understanding and evaluation skills while Mother’s educational qualification was related with evaluation skills. Based on the perception of the teachers, the outcome of student assessment and the relationship between the variables, the professionalism index for five disciplines of Home Science education was developed. This index can serve as a guide to enhance professionalism in students. |
