Description The present investigation was carried out at Horticultural Research Farm, College of Agriculture, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur (Chhattisgarh) during Rabi 2009-2010 in factorial randomized block design with nine treatment combinations consisting of three varieties as (Kufri Pukhraj, Kufri Jawahar and Kufri Khyati) and three levels of nitrogen as (100, 125 and 150% N) were replicated four times.
Variety Kufri Pukhraj produced significantly taller plants as well as more number of shoots, leaves and leaf area index per plant. No significant difference regarding fresh weight of shoots per plant for the varieties under study was observed at all the stages of growth. Kufri Jawahar recorded significantly lowest dry weight of shoots per plant at all the stages of growth. At all stages i.e. 60, 75 and 90 days after planting Kufri Pukhraj gave consistently higher fresh weight of tubers per plant. Dry weight of tubers per plant was found higher in Kufri Pukhraj at all the stages of growth, but it was statistically at par with Kufri Khyati at 75 and 90 DAP.
Number of tubers per plant and grade wise number of tubers per plot were found to be higher in Kufri Pukhraj at all the stages of growth. Number of stolons were also found to be higher in the same variety and it was observed that Kufri Pukhraj and Kufri Khyati were almost similar for both the traits. Yield per plant was found highest in Kufri Pukhraj, which was significantly better than the other two varieties i.e. Kufri Khyati and Kufri Jawahar.
An application of nitrogen 150% proved significantly better for number of tubers, number of stolons per plant at all the stages of growth. The application of 150% nitrogen was found optimum to obtain the higher yield of tubers per plot ( grade-wise, marketable and total tuber yield).
The interaction between Kufri Pukhraj combined with 150% N was found remarkably superior to all the other treatment combinations as regards to number of leaves per plant and unmarketable yield per hectare.
The results indicated that the highest gross return (Rs. 191867 ha-1 ), net return (Rs. 130343 ha-1) and benefit : cost ratio (Rs. 2.11) was obtained under Kufri Pukhraj with 150% N.
