Description Field studies on Influence of new seed dressing chemicals on the
insect pest complex, plant phenology and physiology, effect on the natural
enemies of major pests, effect of seed dresses on microbes in the soil (in vitro
studies) were carried out during rabi 2004 at S.V. Agricultural College,
Tirupati.
Two test crops viz., groundnut and french bean were involved in the
field evaluations. The crops were sown three times during October, November
and December, 2004 to assess the influence of seed dressing chemicals in the
suppression of early season insect pests in groundnut and french bean. The
sucking pests population was nil in ground nut crop from the seed treated
with imidacloprid ( @ 3 g and 6 g a.i./kg) and thiamethoxam ( @ 2.1 g and 3 g
a.i./kg) upto 10 DAG, while, . chlorpyriphos seed treatment was found
ineffective. By 35 DAG the sucking pests population was gradually increased
in all treatments. Leaf miner incidence was low in imidacloprid,
thiamethoxam and carbosulfan seed treatments plots upto 25 DAG. Low plant
stand was recorded in carbosulfan @ 6.25 and 12.5 g a.i./kg treatments.
Incidence of flea beetle was observed in imidacloprid, thiamethoxam
and carbosulfan treatment plots of french bean up to 25 DAG. Incidence of
sucking insect pest complex and leaf miner was less in imidacloprid @ 3 and
6 g a.i./kg, thiamethoxam @ 2.1 g and 3 g a.i./kg upto 25 DAG.
Chlorpyriphos and acetamiprid were less effective against leaf miner. Seed
treatments did not offer any protection against defoliators and pod borers .
Maximum cost benefit ratio was recorded in acetamiprid seed treatments
plots in both the crops , groundnut – 1:12 and french bean –1 :73 .
No deleterious effects on germination of seeds in case of
french bean were noticed with the seed dressings of imidacloprid ,
thiamethoxam , acetamiprid ,carbosulfan and chlorpyriphos ; while,
germination in groundnut was adversely affected with carbosulfan .
Phytomass production was high in thiamethoxam @ 3 g a.i./kg and
acetamiprid @ 1&2 g a.i./kg at 30 DAG in both the crops . The maximum
vigour index was recorded in imidacloprid @ 3 g a.i. /kg seed and
acetamiprid (@1 and 2 g a.i./kg ) treatment in groundnut and french bean.
The differences in leaf area index were among the treatments were significant
in both the crops. Highest SPAD readings and leaf chlorophyll in the test
crops were in acetamiprid @ 2 g a.i./kg and imidacloprid @ 6 g a.i/kg. In
the rhizobial nodulation pattern, (mass and active nodules) were significantly
high in acetamiprid @ 1 and 2 g a.i/kg .
Parasitisation of groundnut leaf miner progressed with age
of crop in November and December sowing and no adverse effects could be
traced from the seed dressings with imidacloprid and thiamethoxam . In
french beans, no adverse effects of treatments on spiders and coccinellids
which predated pupae of leaf miner and infection of Nomurea rileyi on
semilooper were noticed .
In vitro studies on microbial populations through colony counts
and dehydrogenase activity revealed that there were no adverse effects on
these parameters. The highest enzyme activity was in soils with acetamiprid
(1 and 2 g a.i./kg ), followed by thiamethoxam ( @ 2.1 and 3 g a.i./kg ).
Similarly, maximum microbial population (fungi and bacteria) was high in
acetamiprid ( @ 1 and 2 g a.i./kg ) seed treatments in both the crops .
