Description A field experiment was conducted during kharif season of 2007 at the Agricultural
Research Station, Devihosur (District:Haveri), UAS, Dharwad under rainfed condition (Zone
8). Two pre-emergence herbicides atrazine @ 1.25 kg ha-1 and butachlor @ 1.00 kg ha-1 and
two post-emergence herbicides atrazine @ 1.00 and 0.50 kg ha-1 and 2, 4-D @ 0.50 kg ha-1
were compared with farmer’s practice, weed free check and weedy check. Eleven treatments
were tested in randomized complete block design with three replications. Climatic data
revealed that rainfall received during the experimental period was 993.5 mm which was
293.1 mm more than the normal of past 30 years. During cropping season, 831.7 mm rainfall
was received. It was well-distributed up to October which resulted in good crop stand and
growth.
Important weed species observed in the experimental plots were Cynodon dactylon,
Digitaria marginata, Dinebra retroflexa among the broad leaved weeds. among grasses,
sedge, Cyperus rotundus and Ageratum conyzoides, Alternanthera sessilis, Amaranthus
viridis, Euphorbia spp., Commelina benghalensis, Cynotis cyculata, Digera arvensis.
Sequential application of either atrazine (1.25 kg ha-1) or butachlor (1.00 kg ha-1) fb 2,
4-D (0.50 kg ha-1) and atrazine (1.25 kg ha-1) fb atrazine (1.00 kg ha-1) recorded significantly
lower weed population and dry weight of weeds and higher weed control efficiency at all
growth stages with good crop growth.
Effective control of weeds higher grain yield and net income and B: C ratio were
obtained with sequential application of either atrazine (1.25 kg ha-1) or butachlor (1.00 kg ha-
1) fb 2, 4-D (0.50 kg ha-1) and atrazine (1.25 kg ha-1) fb atrazine (1.00 kg ha-1) in Northern
Transition Zone of Karnataka under rainfed condition.
