Description An experiment entitled “Bio-efficacy of new herbicide molecules for weed
management in maize (Zea mays L.)” was conducted during kharif, 2013 at Main
Research Station, Hebbal, UAS, Bangalore. Ten treatments including application of only
pre-emergence herbicides (acetochlor, atrazine, alachlor) at 2 DAS, post-emergence
herbicides (topramezone+atrazine, tembotrione) at 15 DAS, combination of pre- and
post-emergence herbicides (acetochlor, atrazine and alachlor fb 2,4-D Na salt), two hand
weedings (20 and 40 DAS) and unweeded control were replicated thrice in RCBD.
Major weeds observed were Cyperus rotundus, Cynodon dactylon, Ageratum
conyzoides and Borreria articularis. Alachlor 50 EC 1250 g a. i. ha-1 at 2 DAS fb 2,4-D
Na salt 80 WP 500 g a. i. ha-1 at 40 DAS recorded significantly higher kernel yield, net
returns and B:C ratio (8289 kg ha-1, Rs. 89,170 ha-1 and 4.10, respectively), followed by
acetochlor 900 EC 2250 g a. i. ha-1 at 2 DAS fb 2,4-D Na salt 80 WP 500 g a. i. ha-1 at 40
DAS (8107 kg ha-1, Rs. 87,102 ha-1 and 4.05, respectively) and atrazine 50 WP 1250 g a.
i. ha-1 at 2 DAS fb 2,4-D Na salt 80 WP 500 g a. i. ha-1 at 40 DAS (7699 kg ha-1, Rs.
81,661 ha-1 and 3.87, respectively) and two hand weedings at 20 and 40 DAS (7921 kg
ha-1, Rs.81,116 ha-1 and 3.56, respectively) compared to atrazine 50 WP 1250 g a. i. ha-1
at 2 DAS (6909 kg ha-1, Rs. 70,405 ha-1 and 3.53, respectively) without any phytotoxicity
on maize.
