Description The present investigation was under taken at K-block, University of
agriculture Sciences, Bangalore, with the objectives of , assessing genetic
variability in M3 generation and to know the correlation and path
coefficient between seed yield and its component characters, and to
isolate mutants having high yield, high protein content, two seeded and
three seeded mutants. In M3 generation, negative shift in mean was
observed for all the characters except, for shelling percentage and 100
seed weight . Variability increased for characters viz plant height,
branches per plant, plant spread, pod yield, seed yield, number of pods
per plant,100 seed weight and shelling percentage as compared to
control. High heritability and high genetic advance as per cent mean
were observed for all the characters except for plant height. Correlation
study revealed that, Plant height, plant spread, Number of branches per
plant, pod yield per plant and number of pods per plant showed high
significant correlation with seed yield. From the path coefficient studies it
was observed that the characters which showed high positive correlation
with yield may not exert direct positive effect on the yield. Pod yield per
plant exerted maximum direct effect on seed yield per plant. Two single
seeded high yielding, five double seeded, one three seeded mutant,
mutants having high protein content and single mutant highly
susceptible to yellow mosaic virus, were identified as economic mutants
in the present study.
