Description |
Sixty nine hybrids (double and double top crosses) of maize viz., nineteen dwarfxdwarf, twenty two tallxtall and twenty eight dwarfxtall were selected on the basis of their superior predicted performance for studying standard heterosis, correlations, path coefficients and comparison of actual yield of the crosses with predicted yield in comparison with DHM103. The standard heterosis for dry grain yield .was found to be significant in five crosses and all of them were positive. As compared to dwarfxdwarf and tallxtall crosses the dwarfxtall crosses were found to be superior to the check DHM103. The highest yielding dwarfxtall cross (DT28) was superior to the highest yielding tallxtall cross (TT19) by 40.4 per cent, to dwarfxdwarf cross (DD7) by 52.l per cent to the check DHM103 by 93.6 per cent. The investigation also revealed that the crosses between dentxflint parents had comparatively higher yields. Similar results were observed in dwarfxtall hybrids due to genetic diversity in plant stature and grain type . The dwarfxdwarf double crosses in general recorded more plant height and therefore more lodging due to the presence of AR238 line as one of the parent in seventeen out of nineteen crosses. Though the line is reported to contain br2 gene, neither it was dwarf nor stiff like true br2 genotypes stucied earlier. Some other desirable br2 · line can be tried as a substitute to AR238. Lodging in dwarfxtall hybrids was 7.9 per cent, tallxtall 6.0 per cent and dwarfxdwarf 12.9 per cent. The check OHM103 recorded 15.7 per cent lodging. There was no lodging in the highest yielding dwarfxtall and tallxtall c.rosses. However the highest yielding dwarfxdwarf double cross. recorded 25. 5 per cent lodging most probably due to line AR 238. · Correlation studies between predicted and actual yield were negative but not significant. This may be due to different environmental conditions of testing single crosses and hybrids and studies on only selected hybrids predicted to be high yielding. Correlations between 100-seed weight and dry grain weight per ear (0.289*), and total number of seeds per ear and dry grain weight per ear (0.232*) were found to be significant. Path coefficient studies showed that 100-seed weight and total number of seeds per ear had higher direct effects. Apart from yield and lodging the other aspects considered for viability and large scale production of the improved hybrids were maturity of the hybrids Per se and synchronization of flowering of crosses in commercial seed production fields. Keeping all aspects inview proposed that the hybrids 003, TT2, TT18, TT20, OT20, OT21, OT23, OT27 and OT28 be further evaluated to consider their release for commercial cultivation. |
