Description The present study entitled “PRODUCTION AND PROCESSING OF CASHEWNUT IN PRAKASAM DISTRICT, ANDHRA PRADESH – AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS” was undertaken mainly to study the costs and returns and economic viability of cashew orchards along with the processing aspects. Prakasam district which has large area under cashewnut was purposively chosen for the study. Two mandals and four villages having maximum area under cashewnut were purposively selected. All the cashewnut orchardists in the selected villages were listed out and 80 farmers were selected at random. The sample so selected was subjected to post classification into pre-bearing (1st to 5th year) and bearing orchards (6th – 40th year) which comprised of three stages viz., yield increasing period (6th –16th year), yield stabilization period (17th – 30th year) and yield declining period (31st – 40th year). Data were collected from the selected respondents

through well structured survey schedule designed for the purpose for the year 2009-2010. Conventional analysis and project evaluation techniques were employed to analyze the data.
The total human labour requirement per hectare of cashew orchard during its economic life period of 40 years was 3315.09 mandays. Harvesting was the major component which absorbed 1464 mandays (44.17 per cent) followed by watch and ward with 740 mandays (22.32 per cent) and application of manures and fertilizers with 334.86 mandays (10.10 per cent). The total commercial cost of cultivation (cost C) of cashew orchard was Rs. 9,66,401.38 per hectare. The gross and net income realized for the entire economic life period were Rs. 32,09,414.07 and Rs. 22,43,012.69 per hectare respectively.
The net present worth was as high as Rs. 39,79,978.71 at 10 per cent and Rs. 67,727.28 at 24 per cent. The B-C ratio was 2.17 even at higher discount rate of 24 per cent. The IRR was calculated to be 59.94 per cent. All the measures indicated the economic viability of cashewnut cultivation.
The total costs and returns from processing a ton of cashewnuts were Rs. 100503.29 and Rs. 6496.71 respectively.
