Description The present study was undertaken to evaluate the influence of age, sex and
season on hematological, biochemical, enzymatic, mineral and hormonal
parameters, reproductive and growth performances and meat biochemical
parameters in the emu birds under Indian agro-climatic conditions.
Blood samples were collected from 310 apparently emu birds of different
age groups of both the sex and subjected to hematological, biochemical,
enzymatic, mineral and hormonal analysis.
Hematological parameters studied were hemoglobin concentration (Hb),
packed cell volume (PCV), total erythrocyte count (TEC), total leucocyte count
(TLC) and differential count. Hb concentration was significantly lower (P < 0.01)
in the adult emu birds when compared to chicks and growers. Non significant
difference in Hb concentration was noticed between the sexes in the growers and
adult birds of different age groups. PCV showed non significant difference
between the three different age groups of birds. Non significant differences in
PCV was noticed between the sexes in grower and adult birds except a
significantly higher (P < 0.05) PCV in the adult male birds of 5 to 6 years of age.
TEC showed non significant difference between the three different age groups of
birds. TEC was significantly higher (P < 0.01) in adult male birds of 4 to 5 years
of age when compared to other age groups. Thrombocyte count was significantly
higher (P < 0.05) in the growers when compared to chicks and adults. Between the
sexes, significantly higher (P < 0.01) thrombocyte count was observed in the adult
female birds of 4 to 5 years of age. TLC was significantly higher (P < 0.01) in the
chicks when compared to growers and adults. TLC was significantly higher in the
adult male birds between 3 to 5 years of age. Heterophils and eosinophils were
significantly higher (P < 0.01) and lower (P < 0.01) in the chicks than the growers
and adults. Between the sexes, heterophils were significantly higher (P < 0.01) in
the male grower and adult birds whereas, lymphocytes were significantly higher
(P < 0.01) in the female grower and adult birds of all age groups. Influence of
season on hematological parameters revealed significantly higher (P < 0.01) PCV,
TEC, thrombocyte count, heterophils and eosinophils and significantly lower
lymphocyte during breeding season.
Biochemical parameters analyzed were total protein, albumin, globulin,
total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) and HDL cholesterol (HDL-C). Total
protein, globulin, and HDL cholesterol were found to be significantly higher (P
