Description Ph.D Thesis
An investigation entitled “Performance of promising basmati rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars in aerobic culture with different soil organic amendments in rice-wheat system” was conducted at the Research Farm, Main Campus Chatha of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu during kharif 2012 to rabi 2013-14.The soil of the experimental field was sandy loam in texture, slightly alkaline in reaction, low in organic carbon and available nitrogen but medium in available phosphorus and potassium with sufficient quantity of available Zinc and electrical conductivity in the safer range. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications. Twenty four treatment combinations comprising of four basmati cultivars viz.,Basmati-370, Basmati-564,Saanwal basmati and Ranbir basmati were taken as main plot treatments and six sub plot treatments comprising of soil organic amendments and RFD viz., T1: Control (Recommended Fertilizer Dose), T2 :In-situ green manuring of dhaincha on N-basis, T3: In-situ green manuring of dhaincha followed by application of vermicompost on N-basis (1:1), T4:In-situ green manuring of dhaincha followed by application of vermicompost and mulching with dhaincha on N-basis(1:1:1),T5: In-situ green manuring of dhaincha followed by application of FYM on N-basis (1:1) and T6:In-situ green manuring of dhaincha followed by application of FYM and mulching with dhaincha on N-basis (1:1:1) as sub plot treatments. A blanket crop of wheat was taken during rabi to assess the impact of basmati cultivars and soil organic amendments on the performance of succeeding crop of wheat in basmati rice-wheat system. Direct seeding of rice was done in lines giving row-row spacing of 20 cm using a seed rate of 40 kg/ha. Uniform basal application of 15 kg N, 20 kg P2O5 and 10 kg K2O per hectare were applied to the control treatment only through Urea, DAP and MOP and the remaining nitrogen was top dressed in two equal splits at tillering and panicle initiation stages. The crop of wheat variety RSP-561 was grown with its recommended package of cultivation. Sowing of wheat in the treatments preceded by Saanwal and Ranbir basmati was done early as compared to Basmati-564 and basmati-370 during both the years.
Among the basmati cultivars significant changes were recorded in all the growth parameters from 60 days of sowing onwards till harvest. Cultivar Basmati 370 recorded numerically highest plant height followed by Basmati-564 and Saanwal basmati which in turn recorded statistically similar plant height and were found significantly superior to Ranbir basmati. Cultivar Basmati-564 followed by Saanwal basmati registered significantly higher leaf area index, dry matter accumulation, yield and yield attributing characters over Basmati-370 and Ranbir basmati during both the years. Cultivars Basmati-564 recorded maximum grain length before and after cooking whereas Basmati-370 recorded maximum grain breadth, Length –breadth ratio, head rice recovery percentage and aroma. The cultivar Basmati-564 recorded higher net returns and benefit cost ratio followed by Saanwal basmati, Basmati-370 and Ranbir basmati. The treatment which received recommended fertilizer dose was found statistically superior to all the organic amendment applied treatments in respect of growth parameters, yield and yield attributing characters of basmati rice. The treatment T2 was observed to be better in all the quality parameters. The treatment T2 followed by T5
