Description |
The present study entitled "PROJECTIONS OF AREA, PRODUCTION AND PRODUCTIVITY OF IMPORTANT CROPS OF A.P. AND INDIA BY 2000 AD; AN ECONOMETRIC ANALYSIS" has been under taken to measure the growth rates of the / seleted important crops, and to estimate the future projections upto 2000 AD, with a view to provide certain guidelines for policy formulation and appropriate advice which would bring balanced agricultural development. The study was carried out in Andhra Pradesh in comparison with the country as a whole. Attempts have been made to assess the trends in area, production and productivity of selected important crops besides projecting the area, production and productivity of these selected crops upto 2000 AD. The projections of area, production and productivity of the selected crops were calculated based upon the residual mean square method. Four functions were attempted to project the area, production and productivity of the selected crops. They are linear, exponential, quadratic and logistic functions. The reference period of the 1956-57 to 1984-85 and the growth studied dividing the whole period periods viz., study .was parameters into three from were sub- 1. Pre-green revolution period 1956-57 to 1965-66 2. Green revolution period 1965-66 to 1975-76 ' 3. Post-green revolution period: 1975-76 to 1984-85 Growth parameters were also estimated taking the Overall period i.e., 1956-57 to 1984-85~ Analysis of foodgrain production showed that the green revolution has brought about considerable increase in production in the state as well as in the country. The increase in foodgrains produc~ion was mainly attributed to rice which attained added importance after the release of high yielding varieties. Increase in productivity was major source of growth for cereal production particularly of rice and maize crops. Considerable instability of agricultural production was observed in the state and was aggravated since the introduction of new ยท technology in mid sixties. The intensity of instability varied from crop to crop. The instability of production was mainly attributed to variability in productivity. The findings of the study indicated that there was three fold increase in the total foodgrains production from 1956-57 to 1984-85. The area, production and productivity of total foodgrain crops by the turn of this century wil!1be 83 million hectares, 19 million tonnes, 2041 kg ~a . in Andhra Pradesh and 131 m!llion hectares, 221 millon tonnes and 1383 kg ha in India, respectively. |
