The present study was undertaken with the main objective to know the career preferences of agricultural students of Sree Venkateswara Agricultural College, Tirupati. Ex-post-facto research design was followed in the study. Year-wise lists of undergraduate agricultural students were recorded. From each year of B.SC(Ag), fifteen boys and fifteen girls were selected by following systamatic random sampling, thus final sample was 120 students studying B.SC(Ag). The data was collected through structured questionnaires. The statistical tests used in the analysis of data were frequency and percentages, paired comparison method and Wilcoxon matched pairs signed ranks test. Majority of the respondents were of 20 years of age, successful academically, had highly educated fathers settled in government occupations and their mothers with high school and primary education were mostly ' unemployed. Most of the respondents had urban background, belonged to high income group and nuclear families. Administrative job was ranked first followed by bank job research, sales representative, business, e~tension, teaching, cultivation, military job and works no~ related to agriculture in the order of their career preferences. There were significant differences between boys and girls, whereas there were no significant differences between first year and final year students with respect to their career preferences. ยท 'Power and prestige', 'unique nature of job' and 'high salary' were the reasons which were ranked first in the order of preference of the reasons for career preferences of agricultural students. Majority of the respondents had less favourable attitude followed by favourable attitude towards rural oriented careers. |
