Description A sample of 120 school children (60 boys and 60 girls) in the age group of 13-15 years was selected from the two schools of Ludhiana city. The dietary intake, anthropometric measurements, clinical symptoms and haemoglobin level were assessed. The academic and physical performance of the subjects was also recorded. The results revealed that 27 per cent of the nonvegetarian girls had an early menarche at the age between 10-11 years as compared to 10 per cent of vegetarian girls. The per cent adequacy of food intake presented a low intake of cereals, fruits and vegetables, but a high intake of fats and sugar among both the genders in both the groups. The intake of pulses was inadequate among vegetarians and milk and its products among nonvegetarians. The consumption of nonvegetarian food was found to be inadequate among girls. The data on per cent adequacy of nutrient intake revealed that intake of most of the micronutrients was low. The energy intake was higher among boys than girls in both the groups. The adequacy of protein was higher among nonvegetarian boys. The classification of BMI showed a high percentage of vegetarian boys (53 % vs 41%) in the underweight category, but more nonvegetarian girls (51% vs 31%) were ‘at risk for obesity’. The prevalence rate of nutritional deficiency symptoms was observed more among vegetarians. The severity of anaemia showed a higher percentage of vegetarians (30 % boys and 77% girls) affected with different grades of anaemia as compared to their counterparts (3 % boys and 57% girls). The academic performance measure showed a higher percentage of mean scores of vegetarian girls and nonvegetarian boys. However, a significant difference (P ≤ 0.05) was observed for time taken and change in pulse rate during the assigned physical activities depicting better physical work capacity of nonvegetarians.
