Description The Ugar Sugar Works Ltd was established in the year 1942 in
Athani taluk, Belgaum. The overall objective of the study was to analyze
financial efficiency, profitability and contribution of by-products in the
profitability of the factory. Descriptive statistics and growth rates were
computed for various performance indicators. The growth in physical
performance indicators like duration of crushing season (4.84%) and
average sugar recovery (-1.28%) is significant during 2009-10 period. The
compound growth rate of financial indicators viz., Share capital (6.923%),
reserve funds (11.53%), owned funds (10.93%) and current assets
(15.86%) were significant except current liabilities. The current ratio was
greater than unity in all the years. Tests of solvency and turnover ratios
found to be better in all the years. The production cost per quintal of
sugar was Rs. 1526. The average sale value of by-products namely
alcohol, press mud and cogeneration of power were Rs. 30.82, Rs.1.45
and Rs.10.39 crores respectively. An average of 4, 12, 60 and 72 per cent
of respondents were satisfied with the water facility, TV cable connection,
hospital and educational facility respectively. This findings point to the
fact that increasing cogeneration and ethanol production along with
sugar production will help to improve the performance of the factory.
