Description |
Diabetes mellitus, commonly referred to as diabetes, is a metabolic disorder and it is characterized by hyperglycemia. Diabetes results from defects in insulin secretion, or insulin action or both. Several million people are affected with diabetes mellitus and the number of people with diabetes is projected to rise. Prolonged exposure to hyperglycemia is associated with long-term damage of dysfunction and failure of different organ, especially the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and blood vessels and leads to pathogenesis of diabetic complications. Hyperglycemia may increase oxidative stress via alterations of key metabolic pathways such as polyol pathway flux and increased AGEs formation. Patients suffering from diabetes are at an increased risk of developing cataract at an earlier age than people without diabetes. |
