Description The endangered alpine plant Potentilla fulgens was conserved at lower elevation (1200 m asl) outside its natural habitat (1800 – 4350 m in Himalayas) using sexual (seed) and asexual (root segments) propagation methods. Seed germination studies carried out at 25°C under continuous illumination, alternate light and dark (18L: 6D) -utilizing white, red and blue light and continuous dark resulted in 52, 36, 25, 20 and 11percent germination. Propagation through root segments – basal, middle, sub apical and apical -pretreated with IBA (100mg/l) for 60 seconds resulted in 50 - 95% plantlet establishment. The regeneration potential of root segments decreased gradually from apical to sub-apical, middle and basal segments. Agro practices were developed for nursery raising, cultivation and mass multiplication under field conditions at Palampur. Seeds, under field condition, germinated slowly over a period of 4-5 months and the plants flowered in second growing season. Plantlets raised from root segments were more vigorous and sturdier than seed - raised seedlings and those raised from apical segments, flowered during first growing season. Concentration of tannins in roots of cultivated plants (13-16 percent) was at par with those from natural source (14 percent). The present study1 indicates that P. fulgens can be successfully cultivated outside its natural habitat for its sustainable utilisation on commmercial scale.
