Description The present study depicts the cropping pattern, operational land holding and different
pesticides sprayed along with their spray schedule. The study is based on the data
collected from 120 farmers from 6 districts of two states viz., Punjab and Haryana. 20
farmers each from Amritsar, Ludhiana and Mohali of Punjab district and similarly 20
farmers each from Karnal, Rohtak and Hisar districts of Haryana. Farmers of Mohali
district were not much interested in rice crop and were growing maize instead of rice as
water table of this district is low as compared to Amritsar and Ludhiana districts. Also
canal irrigation system in this district is not strong. Similarly, farmers of Hisar were
growing cotton instead of rice crop due to low water table and less canal irrigation
facilities. Farmers of Amritsar and Mohali district were spraying pesticides at shorter
time interval because of vegetable growing in this area. Also, farmers of Karnal district
were applying pesticides at shorter time interval due to growing of vegetables whereas
farmers of Hisar district were adopting shorter spray schedule owing to cotton crop. It
was also realized that many farmers had no choice in terms of suitability and quality of
pesticides but to adopt whatever pesticides were offered to them by the dealers.
