Description |
The development of somatic hybridization is a landmark in the history of plant improvement techniques. It involves fusion of protoplasts and enables gene flow in the synthesis of characters from different plant species, which may be sexually incompatible. Sexual hybridization in plants is more often used as a standard method to bring about new genetic combinations. These new genetic combinations in turn produce novel plant varieties. However, establishment of somatic hybridization protocol for many crops has emerged as a powerful and alternative tool to sexual crossing. It offers the following distinct advantages over sexual crossing: |
