Apple is an important temperate fruit crop of India and world. The horticulture industry has experienced tremendous growth in the past 50 years and has developed into one of the major economic branches of modern agriculture. In fruit crops, viruses are important but lesser studied pathogens particularly in India. The rapid emergence and marked geographic spread of viruses is due to the enhancement of the international trade of propagative materials and their final products. Losses to the quality and quantity of apple produce due to viral infection has been widely reported from apple growing regions of the world. However, characterization of viruses has just begun in the Indian scenario. Apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV), Apple mosaic virus (ApMV), Apple grooving virus (ASGV) and Apple stem pitting virus (ASPV) are the major viruses infecting apple orchards of the world. While the minor viruses on apple viz. Prunus necrotic ringspot virus (PNRSV), Cherry rasp leaf virus (CRLV), Tomato ring spot virus (ToRSV) and Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) have also been reported. ASPV and ToRSV are important viruses with respect to nurseries as they affect success of graft unions. Here, we give a short account of the history and distribution of viruses infecting apple, and describe in brief the host range, symptoms, genome, transmission and detection methods. Finally conventional and transgenic means for their control are discussed. |
