Description |
A survey of the existing literature on the occurrence of special blooms of planktonic algae and the phenomena such as Red Tide in the Northern Indian Ocean has been attempted The paper describes the occurrence of blooms of the blue-green alga, Trichodesmium erythraeum in the different areas of the Northern Indian Ocean, including the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, the Laccadive and Andaman Seas It has been shown that the Trichodesmium blooms are, in general, associated with areas of upwelling, where the organism utilizes all the available nutrients from the environment, preventing the growth and proliferation of the more useful `producer' plankton such as diatoms and dinoflagellates An explanation has been attempted on the basis of "exclusion principle" or the concept of "external metabolites" associated with changes in the environment not always favourable for other forms of algae to flourish A suggestion has been made for detailed physiological and biochemical studies in the areas where extensive blooms of Trichodesmium spp have been observed
