Description Abnormally high concentrations of inorganic phosphates were encountered in the samples collected from the vicinity of the Andamans, during the cruises of INS kistna in September 1963, as a part of IIOE. Samples for analysis were taken from all the standard depths from the surface down to 200 metres. Estimation of phosphates was based on the method of Robinson and Thompson. Features of the examination indicates that, 1) concentrations of phosphates exceeding 12 mu g at/L were found at all the depths at stations close to coasts; 2) vertical distribution of phosphates in 200 metre column does not appear to correspond to any regular accepted pattern and 3) all the phosphates having the abnormally high phosphate concentration were found to be highly turbid and have milky white appearance. It was suspected that the turbidity might be due to the presence of carbonate but qualitative tests proved negative. This is the first time that such studies are taken in this region, hence explanation for this phenomena at this stage could be considered as purely tentative
