Description |
The distribution pattern of manganese in the marine sediments of the west coast of India was studied in relation to the source and environmental factors. The progressive decrease in the manganese content of the sediments in the seaward direction shows that the contribution is practically from land. Higher rates of sedimentation was also observed on the inner shelf particularly between Alleppey and Karwar. The sediments in the slope region were slightly enriched in their manganese content than the immediately adjoining sediments in the shelf region, except off Bombay. The exception is attributed to the extraction of manganese by planktonic foraminifera in this area
