Samples from three oil patches observed around the burning tanker 'M. T. Lajpatrai' at Bombay Harbour were characterised using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (PMR). Two of them were found to be from used lubricating oils. As indicated by gas chromatographic fingerprint pattern, the third and the bunker oil sample was found identical with Bombay High Crude oil
