Description |
The reason de etre for the swing back to an empirical approach in fisheries management as an interim measure towards developing a truly rational method is discussed. The importance of physical oceanographic and meteorological factors especially at meso- and micro- scales as well as biological processes taking place at these levels and their role in controlling the broad strength as evidenced from many publications are briefly reviewed. Recent advances in Oceanography have given conclusive evidence of the need for understanding the processes at these scales on real time basis for a proper elucidation of trophic relationships and bioenergetics of fish larval development in the pelagic environment. It also shows the new direction in which biological oceanographic research is orienting itself largely due to the vital role played by hydrodynamic processes in biological variability in the sea linking also behavioural, physiological, bio-chemical and molecular processes making the whole approach a multidisciplinary one
