Description |
Nineteen species of seaweeds from the coast of Goa were examined for their bromine content following the spectrophotometric method involving ashing with Na@d2@@CO@d3@@, oxidation of bromide to bromine with chloramine-T and measuring the absorbance in chloroform at 400 and 650 nm. The bromine content, on a dry dry weight basis, varied from 0.024 to 0.024% for the green algae, from 0.020 to 0.400% for the algae, and from 0.015 to 0.054% for the brown algae. Only two species @iChondria armata@@ and @iCodium elongatum@@ showed relatively high bromine contents 0.400% and 0.247% respectively. A large fraction of the bromine in these species appears to be organically bound
