Description Surficial sediment samples collected from the continental shelf and slope of the Bay of Bengal were studied for the distribution of organic carbon and its constituent fractions such as carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids and lipids. Organic carbon, carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids and lipids content of the slope sediments were higher than those of the shelf sediments. A positive correlation was observed between the organic carbon and the concentrations of the individual constituents. No relationship was observed between the concentrations of these compounds and the depth of the overlying water column. The total caloric content of the sediments calculated from the above data varied from 11.33-68.46 cal./g dry sediment. Carbon-normalized total carbohydrate yields indicate the presence of terrestrially derived carbohydrates
