Description |
The sea floor of the continental margins of India is covered by a wide variety of terrigenous, biogenous, and chemogenous mineral deposits. Terrigenous heavy mineral placers containing ilmenite, magnetite, monazite, zircon, and rutile are reported from many beaches along the coasts of Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Orissa. These deposits are expected to extend to the inner shelf, but very little work has been carried out to trace their offshore extension except along the Konkan Coast, Maharashtra. The future demand for economic minerals and metals for the year 2000 vis-a-vis the production of material in the last twelve years has been calculated, and in light of the above, the importance and chances of offshore exploration and exploitation are discussed in thie paper
