Description A study of polymetallic nodules in the Indian Ocean taken up as and R&D Project has been extended into an exploratory programme for nodule resources. recognition of India as a Pioneer Investor by the UNCLOS led to the acceleration of the programme to meet time targets. Planning and coordination ensured accuracy and success of the programme by diversification of available expertise and procuring vessels and equipment from the international market. With this approach it has been possible within a period of four years to survey an area of 4 m. sq. km. and file a claim with the U.N. for a pioneer area in the Central Indian Ocean in January 1984. A revised application submitted in July 1987 has considered by the General Committee of the Preparatory Commission, and India become the first pioneer in vestor to be registered for the development of a mine site in the international seabed area
