Description Bathymetric, side scan sonar and shallow seismic surveys were carried out in ports and adjacent nearshore regions of the Arabian Sea off the central west coast of India. It is observed that in the regions of rivers confluencing the sea, the thickness of clays varies from 2 to 10 m and they cover the underlying harder formations (rock/consolidated sediments). Sandbars, U-Shaped furrows and ridges, composed of loose and compact sands are also recorded at the river mouths considered to have been formed by the wave action and tidal currents whereas steep scarps and depressions are due to erosional stages of fractured/altered rock formations during lowered sea levels or minor neotectonic activity. Ripples and lineations are noticed in some of the clay covered channels and adjacent regions. Steep scraps and depressions are observed at a few places in the approach channels. The observed formations and features of the seabed can be suitably utilised for the development of existing harbour channels, new harbours, jetties and other landing places of vessels
